Planning Your Move
Careful planning before a move is the best way to ensure its success.
Our many years of experience in moving families means we can take care of all of the details and assist you every step of the way to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Specialist Packing
We can arrange to pack/unpack your possessions, we will assess your specialist packing and wrapping requirements during an in-house survey.
For precious items like antiques and fine arts, we custom-build wooden crates and storage chambers, or arrange polystyrene injection moulding for items of particular value.
Pre-Move Checklist
Hopefully our Pre-Move Checklist will help you.
Up To One Month Head
- Arrange and confirm your moving date as far in advance as possible
- Speak to your removal company about their packing service/packing cases. They should be able to tell you how many you will need.
- List fixtures and fittings remaining.
- List all the main items you are taking with costings and dates of purchase for insurance purposes.
- Contact your local council for any rebate due on Council Tax
Up To Three Weeks Ahead
- De-clutter lofts, attics, sheds and garages and speak to your removal company if you require storage.
Up To Two Weeks Ahead
- Dismantle furniture that is not designed to be moved when assembled.
- Put safety first and arrange for professional disconnection of your kitchen appliances.
- Organise to have meters read on the morning of the move:-
- Organise to have telephone disconnected and any bills forwarded to your new address.
- Re-direct publications.
- Change address if you rent a television or video.
- Run down food in fridge/freezer.
During The Last Week
- Cancel milk.
- Cancel newspapers
- Collect all important documents, birth and marriage certificates, credit cards, and cash in one place and keep them with you on your move.
- Double check details with your removal company.
- Label all furniture clearly (coloured dots are a good system), marking rooms with corresponding dots. This will help your removal company place the items in the correct rooms at your new destination.
- Empty, defrost and dry-out your fridge/freezer.
- Seal packets, bottles and jars with tape to prevent any spillage.
On The Day Of Your Move
- Let your removal company pack your furniture for you they are professionally trained.
- To ensure items that you wish to take yourself are not loaded in the removal van load into your car.
- Take meter readings in your old and new homes.
- Pack an emergency kit – kettle, cups, tea, coffee, biscuits and milk.
- Check nothing has been forgotten before the removal van leaves, it is your responsibility to ensure nothing is moved by mistake.
- Make sure the house is secure, hand the keys to the estate agent.
- Arrive before your removal team so you can have a good look around your new property.
Notify your change of address to:-
- Electral Role
- Bank to transfer your account
- Post office to re-direct your mail
- Consultant/advisors including solicitor, accountant and stockbroker
- Insurance Company
- DVLA for car registration, licenses etc.
