Hints and tips for stress-free removal

Access
Access to and from the doorway of your homes is critical: please advise your neighbours in advance that a removal vehicle will be parked outside your home. If parking permits are required, this is your responsibility.

Attics/Lofts & Cellars
The moving team is not allowed to enter a loft or cellar unless it is properly illuminated, floored, has a fixed ladder or stairway and a safe point of entry. If this is not the case the contents of attics/loft cellars should be sorted and placed in a convenient area prior to the arrival of the moving team.

Box Collection
All boxes need to be returned to us, we will collect them if necessary, or they can be dropped off at our premises. Please note we do not collect wet boxes. As part of our commitment to the environment we recycle wherever possible.

Contents of Garage/Shed/Loft/Cellar
Under no circumstances will the removal team move any flammable substances, tin of paint, creosote, paraffin, matches, gas bottles or similar items.

Cookers/Washing Machines/Fridges & Freezers
These should be disconnected, drained and dried prior to removal. Fridges/freezers should be emptied. The moving teams are forbidden to tamper with any mains supply:-

  • Water
  • Electric
  • Gas.

Mechanical Derangement
Internal mechanical or electrical derangement of domestic or electrical appliances, unless related external physical damage has occurred, will not be covered under our business terms and conditions.

Moving Day
Try to avoid moving on a Friday — if you have delays with the financial transaction, you may have to wait until Monday to sort the problem out, This would mean having to pay for storage and another day of removal costs — and your removal team may not be available the following week.

Packing yourself
If you are packing yourself, make sure you use suitable, strong boxes — "doubled walled" boxes are best. Never make boxes so heavy that they can't be lifted safely. Use a smaller box for books, if a box gets heavy as you're packing it, fill the remaining space with lighter items, such as bedlinen, towels, cushions or soft toys. Visit our Materials page or contact us for information on the types of boxes available from George Bernard Shaw Removals.

Use packing tape to seal the bottom and top of your boxes and label your boxes clearly, preferably along the tape and mark which room they should be moved to.

Petrol driven equipment
If you plan to take petrol-driven equipment, such as lawn mowers, motorbikes or strimmers, make sure all fuel is drained and batteries disconnected in preparation for moving. Your removal team cannot do this for you.

Presence during the Removal
It is your responsibility to be present throughout the removal (packing and unpacking) to ensure that nothing that should be removed is left behind and nothing is taken away in error.

Self Assembly Furniture
It is your responsibility to dismantle and re-assemble this type of furniture. Please note, due to the nature of this type of furniture, liability cover cannot be provided by George Bernard Shaw for dismantling and re-assembling this furniture.

You’re Responsibilities
Our staff are not authorised or qualified to dismantle and disconnect any gas/electrical household appliances. We recommend that a properly qualified person is separately employed by you to carry out these services. Take down all fixtures and fittings.
